Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates, which encourages the balanced development of the body. It targets deep postural muscles helping to re-balance the body and bring it into correct alignment.
Core Strength is key to Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong, as they are trained to be in Pilates they work in tandem with other muscles to support the spine and movement.
Developing your core strength means you develop stability throughout your torso. This is one of the ways Pilates helps improve back pain.
Pilates exercises are done on a mat or on exercise equipment. At Kent Pilates classes are currently mat based. In turn Pilates helps to re-shape your body, which will become longer, leaner, and more toned allowing a balanced body of strength and flexibility.
